Supporters Direct

Substance conducted the Social and Community Value of Football research which was commissioned by Supporters Direct. The research explored how the social and community value of football, developed tools for how the social value of organisations can be assessed more effectively and investigated how communities benefit from supporter-owned football clubs.

The report, which was launched by Dave Boyle (Chief Executive Supporters Direct), Adam Brown (Substance) and David Conn (Guardian columnist) at the Supporters Direct national conference in London in June, is already proving influential within football as well as in other sports and the wider social enterprise sector.

The project produced a Final Report and a Summary Report as well as six Working Papers and an Interim Report.

Testimonial

In 2008 we commissioned Substance to undertake some research on the Social Value of Football Clubs. Substance was chosen to due to their rich background of Social Research in Sport with a reputation of having a great understanding of the issues facing communities and how they need to be considered in this type of research. Their knowledge has brought considerable value to the research and the trust developed allows us to take on board their suggestions without questioning their motives.
